The Basingstoke Open Show was held at Kempshott Hall on Sunday 25th September and was the fourth and final round of the 2011 Superbowl Competition.

By the end of the Three Counties Show in August Roy Chapman from Southend had built up a clear points lead over John Egan from Port Talbot but having under estimated the opposition in round three still needed a good result to ensure this year’s title.

The weather on the 25th was fine and both exhibitors and the show team were in good humour. The hall set up, the exhibitors soon had their entries unloaded and benching started. Roy Chapman from Southend was a late arrival and was considerably under pressure but as always cheery and took the pressure and ribbing comments well.

Judges for the day were Chris Ralph, Tim Chamberlain, How Pang, Alan Dunne and yours truly. Judging started promptly at 12.30 and not long after completed sheets started coming in. Judith Aylmer doing her usual stalwart job as Show Secretary was soon very busy checking and recording results. After the first flood of completed classes the pace slowed a little but the deliberations continued as the judges worked with their usual steady determination.

For once Roy had some competition in the Furnished Aquaria class as Heather Gardner had prepared a very competent entry. She won the class by a good margin and hopefully, given the result, she will compete again. Roy’s guppys were, however, exquisite.

There were some very nice quality fish exhibited and when the time came to select Best in Show there were a good number of possible contenders. For once the catfish were eclipsed and Best in Show was judged to be a Neolamprologus caudipunctatus. Second place went to a Ctenopoma acutirostre and third place to a Rasbora borapetensis. All three fish were owned by Steve and Debbie Edwards from Port Talbot.  The second and third placed fish won their Diploma classes. Other Diplomas were awarded to Keith Sollitt from Bracknell for his Xiphopherus maculatus and to Roy Chapman for a very nice London shubunkin.

Roy Chapman won round four of the Superbowl with a total of 92 points. Steve & Debbie Edwards were second with 70 points and Peter Quested came third with 48 points. Keith Sollitt and Robert Thomas tied for fourth with 35 points each. Roy’s result confirmed his grip on the 2011 Superbowl trophy which was duly presented to him by Chris Ralph.

Thanks to the exhibitors, judges and all the show team for an excellent show.
